Just as an instrument that is played out of tune is a very unpleasant sound in the ears of others, so a heart that worships God out of tune is a very unpleasant sound in the ears of God.
In Psalm 86:11 David prays, “Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.”
This heartfelt prayer of David was divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit and sung by God’s people. It has been preserved for us in the Word of God to teach us. What is the message to be learned through the words of David? The message is that our daily desire and prayer as Christians should be for God to unite our heart to revere, adore, and honor Him.
This was not only the prayer of David, but also the prayer of Robert Robinson when he penned the words: “Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace.” Knowing the coldness and hypocrisies of his own heart, he desired that Almighty God would tune his heart in harmony with His Word and will.
Each day as we awake, we must, as God’s people, endeavor to make the prayer of David our own. We must yield ourselves to the Sovereign Tuner of all hearts. We must allow the truths, reproofs, exhortations, and instruction of His Word to tune our heart. We must understand that the heart of worship is the worship of God from a pure heart filled with fear and love for Him!
What is the state of your heart as you read these words? Is it as an instrument played out of tune? Is your heart divided, seeking to love Christ and the things of this world? Is there a specific sin you cling to that weakens your fear of God?
Cry out to our prayer-answering God. Seek fervently to set your heart on Christ and His Word. Allow Him to tune your heart each day so that the entirety of your life might be a harmonious, God-glorifying note in the ears of Almighty God.
