Chapter Four

The men that the Japanese assigned to carry the missionaries’ luggage were a very unsavory lot—without the boldness and courage of Darlene and Ruth both they and all they posessed might have disappeared into the jungle. Yet it wasn’t until after the danger was over that they fully realized how courageous they had just been. Often it is only by looking back at what the Lord has already brought us through that we are able to see just how much strength He has given us.

Chapter Five

As Darlene recounted the almost bewildering variety of her fellow captives in Kampili, I could not help but be struck by the detail with which she remembered each individual. Far from withdrawing into her own misery, she remained actively concerned for the welfare of others—even the ones that were difficult to love. While personal suffering can make it easy to ignore the needs of others, it never makes it right.
