Herod Agrippa I

Herod Agrippa I was the grandson of Herod “the Great” through one of the sons that Herod had executed during his lifetime. Herodias was his full sister. He grew up in Rome and, was known as the “black sheep” of the Herodian family for his dissolute lifestyle and habit of running up unpaid debts. After a long series of misadventures, he was appointed by the Romans in AD 41 as king over all the territory that his grandfather had ruled over, bringing the series of Roman governors of Judea to a temporary halt. He was the Herod who appears in Acts as a persecutor of the early church, responsible for executing James and imprisoning Peter. Acts 12 records his gruesome death in AD 44.
